Becoming a dad – Eli story (part 1)
Updated: Feb 22, 2022
Now, this is a story all about how my life got flipped-turned upside down and I’d like to take a minute just sit right there… And I’ll tell you how I became a dad in a town called Midvale.
It was a nice and pretty regular morning at the beginning of 2016. It was a Saturday morning. And I, of course, was sleeping in. When I woke up, I had plans of catching a Premier League match on T.V. and having a huge bowl (or two) of frosted Wheaties.
Low and behold, fate had other plans. As it usually does.
*Rewind 3-4 months*
Melanie: “Hey hun, I think we should start making plans for building our family! What do you think?”
Andrew: “I think that’s a great idea.” (whilst finishing up some homework for his business degree)
*Fast Forward back to the Present Day*
You see, my wife, on this lovely Saturday morning, had been awake since 5:30 or 6 am full of anticipation. She had just done “the test” and had “the news.” And me, in total pre-dad fashion and in all my glory, was still asleep come 9:30 am.
I had just barely opened my sleepy eyes from my enchanting dreams of adventure when, all of a sudden, a FedEx bag was thrown onto my lap.
My wife said ecstatically, “I forgot one of your Christmas presents! Open it, Open it, Open it!!”
(Side Note: I’m Santa’s #1 Fan. So Christmas round 2 was pretty exciting.)
So, with all my “just woke up and super awake” human strength I tore open the bag to find…
“Huh?” I said.
“You’re gonna be a dad!” She said.
“I’m gonna be a WHAT!?” I said.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BUDDY! I WAS GONNA BE A DAD!
The most incredible feeling overcomes you when you first say those words. Never mind the thoughts of heavy responsibility, long nights, and endless worries of what college he will get into. I was going to be a dad. I was going to have the opportunity to create a mini “me” through which I can vicariously live during AYSO soccer matches.
All kidding aside. I was pretty darn excited… The feelings of joy and excitement you have are only truly understood by other soon-to-be parents. (If you have kids, you are probably nodding your head and smiling at this moment.)
My wife and I hugged and cried together with glorious tears of joy sharing that beautiful moment. We were going to be parents.
And that’s where this all began…
